An Independence Day Snapshot

Independence Day is a plethora of events.  Flag hoisting ceremonies followed by national anthem, march past, cultural programs, independence day tweets and status updates, patriotic movies on television, live telecast of parade at Red Fort, inspiring speeches. Indeed, August 15 renews and strengthens our national spirit.

While I was participating in Independence Day celebrations this year at our apartment in Chennai, a British lady came into my notice. With our national flag pinned up on her sleeves she decorated the apartment premises with tri-coloured balloons, took part in cultural shows, keenly listened to speeches and distributed sweets. During the flag-hoisting ceremony with all respect she saluted our national flag and sang our national anthem. She was actively involved in every event.

Unintentionally, for a few seconds I recalled the holocaustic experience of our forefathers under British rule. It is their decades-long hardships and sheer determination that trigger even the colonial powers to respect a third world nation. No other form of gratitude than Unity in Diversity would be a tribute to them.
